About the authors

Mark Ainley is a writer and teacher with a specialty in historical piano recordings. Since his introduction to the topic in the 1980s, he has produced magazine articles and CD booklet notes for multiple international publications, in addition to giving lecture presentations across the globe. His extensive research into the legendary pianist Dinu Lipatti has helped uncover previously unknown recordings and details about the artist’s recording career. Maria Monica Bojin graduated the National Music University of Bucharest. Putting her musical knowledge in a wider context, she was awarded a PhD in Philology by the University of Bucharest with her thesis Intersection, Interpretation, Adaptation: Aspects of the Libretto in Contemporary British Opera. Having worked for 13 years for Radio România Muzical, the classical music station of the Romanian Radio, she relocated to Brussels where she now teaches music appreciation and choral singing while continuing to be part of the team composed by her former Radio colleagues responsible for organising, since 2010, the Lipatti Days Festival, in honour of the great Romanian pianist.


Ştefan Costache studied Music Pedagogy at the National Music University of Bucharest, graduating in 1999 and working, ever since, as Producer for Radio România Muzical, Romania’s only classical music radio station. In 2010 he co-initiated, together with Monica Isăcescu, the Lipatti Days, series of events comprising a national piano competition, recitals by world-famous soloists, exhibitions, musicology conferences, dedicated programmes on the Romanian National Radio etc. Co-initiator and coordinator of the most comprehensive website dedicated to Dinu Lipatti, www.dinulipatti.org, Ştefan Costache is also co-editor of the two 1000-page volumes of the pianist’s letters published in 2017 by the Grafoart press in celebration of Lipatti’s 100th birth anniversary.


Viniciu Moroianu (born in 1962) studied piano with Marta Paladi and Gabriel Amiraș. In 1973 he won his first national piano competition and afterwards became a laureate of international competitions in Paris (Guilde française des artistes solistes, 1979) and Bucharest (George Enescu, 1991). His extensive repertoire includes first performances as well as large-scale, more rarely performed works. He took part in international festivals in Besançon, San Jose, Graz, Chișinău, Bratislava, and performed with orchestras from Great Britain, Austria, Switzerland, Moldova and Bulgaria. The pianist played in live concerts for the European Broadcasting Union, the Romanian Radio and Radio Bartók. He recorded for labels in Romania and Greece. Viniciu Moroianu prepared the first editions of several works by Dinu Lipatti and Radu Paladi and he earned a PhD in Music with his thesis about Lipatti as composer. He is currently leading a piano class at the National Music University of Bucharest.


Cristina Şuteu earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Musicology in 2009 and a Master’s Degree in 2011 from Gheorghe Dima Music Academy in Cluj-Napoca. In 2015 she defended her PhD thesis, completed under the supervision of Professor Gabriel Banciu from the above-mentioned institution. She was an Erasmus student (2014-2015) at Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna. In 2016 she published her PhD thesis under the title Critica muzicală: periegeză, exegeză şi hermeneutică [Musical Criticism: Periegesis, Exegesis and Hermeneutics] and edited the volume Florilegiu enescian [Enescian Florilegium] authored by the musicologist Viorel Cosma. During her years of study, she carried out research internships at prestigious libraries in Australia, Italy, England, Austria and Spain. Currently she is an assistant lecturer at Gheorghe Dima Music Academy.
