About the Authors

Mihaela Georgiana  Balan is  an  assistant  professor  at  the  George  Enescu University of Arts in Iaşi. She defended her PhD thesis at the same university, under the supervision of Laura Vasiliu (2015). She has received Excellency Diplomas offered by George Enescu University for special achievements during her studies. She has participated to national symposiums for BA and MA students, and musicology conferences for PhD students and professors. She gave papers at the International Congress of Numanities organized at University of Kaunas by the International Semiotics Institute (2014), the 12th World Congress of Semiotics organized by the New Bulgarian University from Sofia (2014), and the International Musicological Conference: Musical Romania and the Neighbouring Cultures – Traditions, Influences, Identities organized by the George Enescu University of Arts in Iaşi (2013).

Vlad Dimulescu started to play piano in his native town Braşov, and contin- ued his musical studies at the Bucharest Conservatory: piano with Constantin Ionescu-Vovu, accompaniment with Martha Joja, and chamber music with Petre Lefterescu. He completed in 2000, under the supervision of Valentin Timaru, his PhD dissertation (Benchmarks of Bel Canto in Chopin’s Pianistics, published in 2004). He performed in Romania, Poland, Italy, Germany, Portugal, Spain, Greece, Bulgaria, and Iceland. He is currently professor and head of the Department of Keyboard and Chamber Music at the National University of Music Bucharest.
He won prizes in several piano competitions (George Enescu, Bucharest; Vina del Mar; Salerno) and performed in international festivals (Interforum, Budapest; Dinu Lipatti, Sinaia and Bucharest; Chamber Music Festival, Braşov; George Enescu, Bucharest; Icelandic Chamber Music Festival, Reykjavik). He re- corded two CDs: the first, with music by Enescu, Chopin and Brahms (2010), and the second by Chopin (2015).

Sanda Hîrlav Maistorovici graduated from Sigismund Toduţă Music High School (where she studied with Papp Tibor), the George Dima Conservatory in Cluj-Napoca (piano studies), and the Philology Faculty of the Bucharest University. She was a piano teacher in Ploieşti, and since 1994 she has been an academic at the National University of Music Bucharest. She earned her PhD in Musicology in 2000, under the supervision of Valentin Timaru. She is a member of the Union of Composers and Musicologists in Romania, and has published articles and reviews in journals and daily newspapers, having also been invited to national and international conferences. Her books comprise monographic studies about the Romanian composer Paul Constantinescu, about the repertoire of Romanian miniature for piano, about Romanian oral traditions in the 20th century, and about The Art High School in Ploieşti. She is involved in prodigious cultural activities as founder and president of the Paul Constantinescu 2009 Cultural Association.

Alexandru Leahu is one of most important Romanian musicologists, spe- cialized in the field of aesthetics. He studied in Bucharest, but also in Rome (Conservatory of Santa Cecilia). Since 1965 he teaches aesthetics at the National University of Music, Bucharest, nowadays as a doctoral supervisor. Among his writings, quite remarkable are the books about Domenico Scarlatti (1965), Maeștrii claviaturii [The Masters of Keyboard, 1976], and also the translation into Romanian of Friedrich Nietzsche’s Der Fall Wagner.

Laura Otilia Vasiliu is a professor at the George Enescu National University of Arts in Iaşi and a researcher specializing in the analysis of modern musical works, as well as in the general musicology of that period. Her published activity includes books – Articularea și dramaturgia formei muzicale în perioada modernă. 1900-1920 [Articulation and Dramaturgy of the Musical Form in the Modern Era 1900-1920], Muzicologia și jurnalismul. Prezența muzicii clasice în media românească după 1989 [Musicology and Journalism. The Presence of Classical Music in the Romanian Media After 1989] –, musicological studies published in academic journals, and works presented at numerous national and international symposia. She is Editor-in-Chief of the peer-reviewed journal Artes. Journal of Musicology.
